Sam’s alarm goes off, jolting me awake and scaring the baby, though this happens every morning.

Why can’t I just be normal and not get startled by something as simple as a bedside alarm? When will this get better?

“Hey, love! Came to sneak the baby away to get him dressed. I didn’t realize you were awake already. He has an appointment today and it’s so much easier to get him dressed before the older two,” Aphie says, lying down next to me and putting her cooing baby on her bent knees like an airplane.

“You guys taking Keith and Maria with you?” I ask, playfully poking the baby in his side while his mom lifts her legs, making him “fly” eliciting a giggle from the sweet little guy.

“Yeah. We couldn’t find a sitter, and they definitely aren’t old enough to leave unattended,” she explains.

“Well, today is your lucky day. I got another text this morning, so it’s a lockdown day. They can stay with me if you’d like.”

I began to receive threatening and cryptic messages from John shortly after we got here. I consulted a lawyer, who told me I couldn’t block him or prevent him from contacting the children, so now I get these messages every few days and he talks to the boys on the phone every night, continuing our torture. The one this morning is particularly disturbing. I hand Aphie my phone so she can see it for herself.
